Our History
Managing Director Angeline Westley left the business world to have her daughter in November 2001, and decided not to go back to full time work immediately.
Having also taught fitness for around 10 years, she decided to expand this business and took further qualifications to enable her to add dietary advice to her services. Drawing a pie chart reflecting her clients' diet to compare with the government model, she helped them to easily understand the changes required to improve their health, weight and well-being.
She also started to explain healthy eating and balanced diets to her young daughter in very basic terms and realised that it was easy for her to grasp the concept and learn the information really quickly.
Then the nightly dreams started; with visions of children running around dressed as food, jumping into the correct food group categories on a giant pie chart and having great fun learning about healthy eating.
Unable to get the thoughts from her head, she developed a healthy eating workshop for schools and after struggling to find suitable teaching aids to support it, she had her own prototypes made.
In the autumn term of 2006 meetings with the council and local schools were arranged. Possible reasons why insufficient progress has been made to create sustainable change in children's eating habits to have a real impact became clear. Central support staff and specialist teachers are too few, and most teachers felt they lacked sufficient knowledge and confidence to enable them to offer much creativity, depth or progression to teaching the subject, assessing the base line and measuring progress was extremely difficult and the lack of suitable support materials or time to teach yet another lesson were further barriers.
The solution became clear - to put the workshop and materials in a box with full guidance and support - allowing anyone to pick it up and use it immediately, regardless of prior knowledge.
Then follow-on resources would progress from this starting point to enable the subject to grow as the children make their way up through the school. Much research was done using reports on Health, Obesity, Food Technology, Teaching, The National Diet & Nutrition Survey and much more.
Various prototypes were tested with children and consultations took place with the council and schools to ensure the product going to market would encompass everything required by teachers to make it as effective as possible. The company was incorporated and registered dietitian Elaine Gardner joined the management team to ensure accuracy of content. Meetings took place with The National Healthy Schools Programme and The School Food Trust, and our pilots ran in the autumn term of 2007 to almost 500 children, producing fantastic results which exceeded even our own expectations. Then finally, we launched NutriSkill officially at the NEC Education Show in March 2008.
